How It Works
Clinically-Informed Comfort and Protection
At Night Shield Dental, our nightguards are not generic over-the-counter solutions — they are built from high-quality, medical-grade materials and designed to support individuals managing sleep bruxism and sleep apnea-associated jaw clenching. Each guard provides a customised fit, tailored at home, without the high cost of clinical fabrication.
1. High-Quality Materials, Personalised Fit
Our guards are manufactured using BPA-free, food-grade EVA — a material widely recognised in clinical dentistry for its biocompatibility, flexibility, and durability. This ensures a guard that is both safe for long-term oral use and effective in distributing occlusal forces associated with grinding and clenching.
The boil-and-bite customisation process allows patients to achieve a secure, contoured fit from home, reducing bulk and enhancing comfort without compromising on protection.
2. Moulding Instructions
To begin:
- Submerge the guard in boiling water for the recommended duration.
- Allow it to cool for ~10 seconds or until comfortably warm.
- Center the guard over your upper teeth, bite down gently, and apply pressure with your fingers and tongue to ensure full adaptation to your dental arch.
This process creates a precise, anatomically-contoured fit.
3. Trim and Refit for Optimal Comfort
After moulding, assess comfort and retention:
- If the guard feels oversized near the gingival margin or posterior region, carefully trim the excess with sterilised scissors.
- The material may be reheated and reshaped multiple times to fine-tune the fit as needed.
This adjustability allows for patient-specific optimisation, which is particularly beneficial for individuals with varying arch shapes or sensitivity.
4. Nightly Use and Maintenance
When worn consistently, the nightguard:
- Reduces mechanical stress on the dentition and temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
- May alleviate jaw tension and secondary symptoms such as morning headaches or disrupted sleep
- Supports airway stability in cases where jaw positioning influences sleep apnea symptoms
Rinse the guard after each use and clean gently with a toothbrush and warm water (avoid toothpaste or harsh cleaners).
Important Considerations
This is not a one-size-fits-all device. For optimal efficacy, brief time should be taken to mould and trim the appliance appropriately. While not a replacement for a professionally fabricated occlusal splint, this solution offers clinically-relevant protection at a fraction of the cost — ideal for patients with mild to moderate bruxism or as a temporary/backup solution.
